Finding
a lodging: the AAA (Akademisches Auslandsamt)
gives the students information about real state
agencies or lodging advertisements outside the university,
and helps them to obtain a room in the university
residence.
University
Residences: as they are part of the heart
of the university life, the university residences
are quite peculiar in Germany. They may have small
rooms with private kitchen and bath, or be a small
house or floor with several rooms, and shared kitchen
and bath. There are also many halls: the Partyraum,
to organize the celebrations of the residence, the
library, the university restaurant, the bar and
the chapel.
In these residences the atmosphere is very pleasant
and quiet to facilitate the study. The prices are
very cheap (compared with the ones of a rent, usually
higher). But it is really difficult to obtain a
vacancy, and it is necessary to book with a lot
of anticipation.
Renting
an apartment: rents in Germany are usually
quite expensive, this is the reason why it is better
to investigate in advance to find a cheap apartment
. The students residences have better prices. These
are organized by institutions called Studentenwerk.
There, the student can find all the information.
All the rooms are usually furnished, but with few
kitchen utensils. The prices depend on the quality
and location of the house, and it is possible to
choose between a rent with or without services.
Shared
Apartment: Other type of lodging is the WGs
or Wohngemeinschaft, which means shared floor. These
floors are shared between 2 and 5 people. This one
is a good option for those students who travel by
themselves and want to share their experiences with
other students.
Other options:
you can also look for other lodgings in the local
newspapers, advertisements boards in universities,
or real estate agencies. You should consider that
the real estate agencies usually require two months
for commission. Our sponsor Sprachcaffe
Language PLUS offers its student residences
for those who wish to learn the German language
in Germany, in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf.
